What Is Addiction? | Steps to Recovery

Addiction is the loss of control over a substance or behavior and the continuation of this relationship despite experiencing negative consequences in different areas of life. Over time, the brain begins to perceive this substance or behavior as a source of relief and reward; as coping skills for dealing with stress become weaker, the addiction may become stronger. This process is not merely an individual choice, but a multidimensional condition shaped by the interaction of biological predispositions, psychological factors, and environmental conditions.

As addiction progresses, it can affect a person's thought patterns, emotional responses, and relationships; feelings of guilt, shame, and helplessness may become more common. However, addiction is a process that can be managed and overcome through accurate information, awareness, and support. Understanding the nature of addiction correctly helps replace judgment with compassion and strengthens the possibility of change instead of hopelessness.
