Addictions
Let's overcome this with handicrafts.

WHAT IS ADDICTION?

Addiction is a condition in which a person repeatedly uses a particular substance or continues a behavior in a way they can no longer control. It negatively affects an individual’s physical health, psychological well-being, family relationships, and social life. Addiction is not merely a matter of willpower; it is a health problem with biological, psychological, and social dimensions.

During the addiction process, people often continue using the substance or engaging in the behavior not to seek pleasure, but rather to feel “normal” or to escape distressing emotions. Over time, loss of control develops and attempts to quit become more difficult. We overcome addictions through handicrafts.

TYPES OF ADDICTION

ALCOHOL ADDICTION

Alcohol addiction is a condition in which a person is unable to control their alcohol consumption and alcohol use becomes central to daily life. Over time, tolerance increases, withdrawal symptoms may occur when alcohol use is stopped, and alcohol use can lead to serious problems in family, work, and social relationships.

GAMBLING ADDICTION

Gambling addiction is a type of behavioral addiction that is not tied to a substance but to a compulsive behavior. The person continues to gamble despite losses, which can lead to financial, psychological, and social problems. Loss of control and a persistent urge to gamble are among the main symptoms.

SUBSTANCE ADDICTION

Substance addiction develops through the regular and uncontrolled use of narcotic or stimulant substances. These substances affect brain chemistry and can lead to both physical and psychological dependence. As use progresses, quitting becomes more difficult and serious health risks may emerge.

Globally, approximately 3 million people die each year from alcohol-related causes. This accounts for 5.3% of all deaths worldwide.

  • Youth at Risk: Approximately 13.5% of all deaths in the 20-39 age group are directly related to alcohol.

  • Burden of Disease: Alcohol consumption is a primary cause of over 200 types of illnesses and injuries worldwide (cancer, cirrhosis, traffic accidents, etc.).

  • Striking Comparison: Alcohol causes more premature deaths than tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes combined.

Project Objective

Empowerment Through Knowledge and Awareness

One of the main aims of this project is to reduce misconceptions and stigmatizing attitudes toward substance addiction by ensuring that individuals and families have access to accurate and reliable information. Addiction is addressed not as a lack of willpower or personal weakness, but as a health and adaptation process with biological, psychological, and social dimensions. Through the content and guidance activities provided within the project, the project aims to increase public awareness about addiction and promote a more informed approach.

Psychosocial Support and Strengthening Life Skills

The project aims not only to help individuals living with substance addiction stop using substances, but also to enable them to maintain their lives in a healthier, more balanced, and more productive way. To this end, it focuses on strengthening core life skills such as emotion regulation, building self-esteem, coping with stress, and establishing daily routines. The psychosocial support activities help individuals deal more effectively with challenges they may face during recovery and reduce the risk of relapse.

Supporting Family Involvement and Social Cohesion

The role of the family is of critical importance in combating addiction. This project aims to help families understand the process correctly and develop supportive and informed approaches instead of blaming and controlling attitudes. Through family-focused training and guidance activities, the project seeks to strengthen skills in healthy communication, setting boundaries, and crisis management. In this way, it aims to prevent individuals experiencing addiction from becoming isolated, rebuild social ties, and ensure sustainable social reintegration.
