Addiction Psychology
Addiction Psychology examines how addiction takes root in an individual's mental and emotional world. Addictive behaviors are often shaped not by the pursuit of pleasure alone, but by the need to escape from stress, loneliness, feelings of worthlessness, fear, and overwhelming emotions. As the brain's reward and motivation systems adapt to these behaviors, individuals may begin to overlook long-term consequences in exchange for short-term relief.
Over time, this process creates a powerful psychological cycle: triggers, cravings, substance use or behavior, followed by feelings of guilt. While this cycle can weaken a person's self-confidence, it may also reinforce the belief that "I cannot quit." Understanding the psychology of addiction helps move beyond blaming willpower and highlights that lasting recovery is possible through awareness, support, and the development of healthy coping skills.
